Narrative
The Oakland city directories trace William Hugh's career from being an employee of T.H. Nevins in 1900 and then as a bookkeeper at the Hook Brothers & Co., a furniture and carpet store, (the same place his father was a delivery teamster) in 1904, and by 1912 he was a bookkeeper for the Oakland Enquirer newspaper. By 1928 he was the Secretary/Treasurer of the Enquirer Publishing Co., a position he held until his retirement.
William Hugh married a lady (probably by the name of Sophia-she is shown on the 1910 census as "daughter-in-law" living in the McCutcheon household), but divorced with no issue about 1916. He then had a female companion by the name of Agnes Williams whom he meet while working at the Oakland Post-Enquirer.
