Ruth attended Fremont High School in Oakland, but it burned down before she graduated, so she finished high school at Castlemont High School, also in Oakland
Ruth's career began as a stenographer for an insurance company in San Francisco and at the same time she played basketball on the company's all womens team. From about 1937 onward she was a homemaker in Oakland raising three kids, but also spent time as a folk dance instructor and square dance caller. The family often traveled to dance campouts and festivals. After raising her family, Ruth worked for the rug dealer, Bogoshian Brother and then as a secretary for the Hayward, California school district at Tennison HS..
