Narrative
Sammy was an Army nurse during WWI in France. She was attached to Evacuation Hospital No. 10 near the front lines of the Marne. As told by son Harold.
California Death Records list her birth date as 12 May 1880, but Husförhörs-Bok for Kalmar iän, Sweden list it as 19 June 1880. This jives with the Ellis Island Passenger record for her as she landed on 13 May 1892 at age 11. If her birth date had been May 12, she would have just turned 12 as she landed.
Sammy first settled in Chicago and then San Jose where she was a 1910 graduate of the Santa Clara Hosptial School of Nursing.
After WWI, she was a public health nurse for Santa Clara county until she opened a sanitarium at the Withey ranch in Los Gatos. She retired in 1944 when the ranch was distroyed by fire.
Her last address was 1730 Lincoln Ave. in San Jose.
Narrative
The 1940 census lists Judith as "Housekeeper" in the home of Robert Withey, along with several "lodgers". Her occupation is listed as "Nurse" in the home, so the "lodgers" where probably guests of the sanitarium she operated there. The address listed is 29 Greenwood road, Los Gatos, CA, near present day "Withey road".
Narrative
The 1930 census lists Judith as head of household with a couple of "servants", four "patients" and two borders, one of whom is her son Harold age 10. While I haven't seen the actual census page, it would appear that she was at the same ranch as in 1940.
Narrative
The 1920 census has Judith living at: Cucmonga Twp Alta Loma Village, San Bernardino, California with several other women. I suspect this may have been a home for unwed mothers as her son Harold was born the previous October.
Narrative
The 1900 census has her working as a servant in the household of Mary Annie Warner (age 75) in: Lake Forest city & North Chicago vill, (pt.), Lake, Illinois
